The Big Switch Off 2025 – What Does It Mean For Your Business?

November 30, 2022
News

In case you missed it, telecommunications as we know it will be forever changed as the landline is switched out for an internet & cloud based solution by 2025. While this is a big change for businesses, there’s no need to worry! You will still be able to make calls as you usually do, you’ll just be connected differently.

That said, it is essential that business owners future proof their telecoms sooner rather than later, as the demand to switch to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) will dramatically increase as we near 2025 - and we’ll take a wild guess that you don’t want to be left without a phone system.

Ready or not, it’s coming. So what can you do right now as a business owner to ensure you’re ready for the switch? We’ve got you covered with our short guide:

Firstly, A Quick Recap: What is the Big Switch Off?

Just in case you hadn’t heard, The Big Switch Off is the replacing BT’s ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) and Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN), in place of a cheaper, faster, internet based solution. This means everyone (yes we mean everyone) in the UK will no longer use traditional anologue landlines, but instead will utilise VoIP.

What does the Big Switch Off mean for my business?

The switch brings a plethora of positive changes for businesses. VoIP can be tailored to suit your business needs and is as flexible as you need it to be. With full cloud flexibility you can switch services and features on or off, or scale things up or down when you need to. That means you’ll spend just what you need to, and not a penny more.

It also means improved functionality that our old analogue landlines just couldn’t offer. Even on the most basic of VoIP solutions you’ll be able to make and take calls on any device, from wherever you are, from the same number at a low cost - perfect for streamlining communications whether your team works in the office, remotely or flexibly.

However, it’s not just calls. Switching to voip from a PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network) or ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) also means that any other devices that connect to your landline currently will need to be reviewed and switched too - think: security & fire alarms, entry systems, payment terminals, CCTV etc. The PSTN and ISDN switch off will also affect FFTC. That’s why it’s so crucial to make the switch sooner rather than later.

Why VoIP & What Actually is it?

VoIP is the future of telephony and has already changed the way we take calls, communicate with customers and make sales. Essentially VoIP technology is a way of making phone calls using computers and mobile devices with an internet connection. Sounding familiar? You’ve likely already been using this technology for at least the past couple of years with apps like Zoom, Microsoft Teams & Webex.

This cloud-based system is hosted off-site and managed by a provider, meaning no headaches or maintenance for you - and as for downtime? Forget about it.

What do I need to do for the Big Switch Off?

With that said, moving your telephony to a cloud-native service isn’t the complex, lengthy, or costly process that some may perceive it to be. It might sound like a lot of additional work, especially if you’re a small business owner, but switching to VoIP is a breeze.

Here’s what to do in 3 steps:

  1. Ensure you have a strong & reliable internet connection. Not sure if yours is up to scratch? You can test your connection speed for free here.

  2. Check with your current provider when your contract is due for renewal. This will give you a deadline to get prepared for the switch and will help you to avoid any early termination charges.

  3. Explore your options. VoIP has endless possibilities for businesses, so ensure you have an understanding of what your business needs to make the switch seamlessly. Not 100% sure? Get a free audit.
